If you are a Conditional Permanent Resident, you cannot use Form I-90 to renew your Green Card.
To file an I-90, all you have to do is to download the free application from www.uscis.gov and fill it up. You can either write using black ink or print your answers in the form. After filling the form, you have to mail it to the USCIS. That sounds quite simple, doesn't it? But, the real work is in answering the questions in the form. Even if there is a minor error in the answers, your request to renew/replace your Green Card may be denied. The most common errors are not attaching the correct fee. Your application form will be considered invalid, if it doesn't have your signatures wherever necessary.
To file an I-90 application form, you have to pay $455. In addition to the application charges, you have to pay a fee of $85 for biometric services like fingerprint scanning. Even if your application is denied by the USCIS, your fee will NOT be returned with the documents. Everytime you file an application, you must pay the fee to the USCIS.
If you have filed your I-90 right with all the accurate answers to replace or renew your Green Card, you have to wait for a response from the USCIS. Upon accepting your application, the USCIS will send a confirmation letter between 1 and 3 weeks after filing. If your form has not been properly filed, you may receive a rejection notice or a notice requesting additional documents.
Roughly 5 to 8 weeks after filing, you will have your biometric screening appointment. This is usually done to collect your signatures, thumb impressions, photographs, etc.
After this, everything you should do is over and you can sit back and relax while your Renewal/ replacement Green Card application is processed. Approximately 8 to 10 months after filing, you will receive your new Green Card from the USCIS.
Note that all the time periods mentioned here are approximate calculations. This may change according to the load of the USCIS office or the accuracy of your filing.
